THE 1930’s: WHAT A DECADE (IN-HOUSE ONE SHOE)

Unlike the previous decade, the 1930’s was an era of hardships. Hit with the great depression, families struggled to put food on the table. Meanwhile, Swing music increased in popularity and slowly became more popular than jazz. Movies such as “Gone with the Wind” and “The Wizard of Oz” were released in the 1930’s and reminded us that there is “no place like home” and that magic and romance still existed. Artists Diego Rivera and Salvador Dali helped us escape into the visual world of surrealism and Amelia Earhart took flight as the first woman pilot. Historian Jim Gibbons will take you to a time when the American Dream seemed to be an unachievable pursuit. The age of radio made worldwide communication possible, and political figures, F.D.R. and Gandhi marked their historical stance. Dictators Adolf Hitler and Benito Mussolini spread fascism throughout the decade with the rise of the Nazi party. Relive history and enjoy an afternoon with friends. We will include a light lunch to top off the afternoon. (KF) Deadline to sign up for this event is Friday, October 14th.

“NEWSIES” at the Marriot Lincolnshire Theater – ONE SHOE

A Thousand Voices. A Single Dream. Inspired by the real-life New York City Newsboy Strike of 1899, “Newsies” is the rousing tale of Jack Kelly, a charismatic newsboy and leader of a ragged band of teenaged ‘newsies,’ who dreams only of a better life far from the hardship of the streets. But when the newspaper publishing titans raise distribution prices at the newsboys’ expense, Jack rallies newsies from across the city to fight them. With music by Alan Menken and book by Harvey Fierstein, this recent Broadway smash is a high-energy musical thrill for the whole family! Lunch menu to be finalized – registrants will be contacted for food choice. Deadline to sign up for this tour is Wednesday, November 2nd.
